We got our first ARC to review for you. We're so excited!

The Wives, by new fave writer Tarryn Fisher isn't due out until this December (making it a fantastic gift for the bookworm in your life), but we wanted to review it now so you'd be looking forward to it.

We discovered Tarryn Fisher when her book Mud Vein was gifted to us by one of her devoted fans. It's a hard book to read, full of feelings and heartbreak, but also hope, and we loved it. Then, we read Marrow, which isn't exactly the sequel, but it really is. Loved it, too. Next came F*ck Love, Atheists Who Kneel and Pray (not a religious book, btw), and then The Wives.

[NOTE: There are more books by this fantastic and highly original writer who proclaims "The Rise of the Villain" as a way to celebrate everything about ourselves, including the fact that we're not perfect and that there may be things driving us in our lives that others can't see. We're working on getting to those books, too, but have you seen our TBR? OMG.]

REVIEW:

I think this book is a good story and Tarryn Fisher is definitely a good writer. That said, I had a few issues with this book, despite the fact that I actually really liked it. I also found myself, after the first chapter, DYING to know what was going to happen! Seriously. I had to force myself to not skip the end and find out everything, and I'm glad I did because I'd have missed out on a fabulous story.

Image in you're the wife of a man who has two other wives. How long would you be willing to go without knowing who the other women are and what they're like? Could you accept that you alone are not enough and allow things to continue unchanged? What might you be willing to do to have all of your questions answered, and what if that led to the confirmation of your fears, too?

I found the main female character to be difficult to like and relate to. I simply could not empathize with or relate to her in her relationship. Things happen that I can sympathize with, but by the end of the book, I really didn't like her any better. That's not a bar to enjoying the book and the story, though; a lot of characters are unlikable and that's often the point. I have disliked a lot of main characters but their stories are what matters, and this is actually what's at the heart of Fisher's Rise of the Villain philosophy. A character doesn't have to be sweet and perfect to have a story to tell; a liar, an abused woman, a sick child, a thief, a killer, an adulterer, anyone you meet - they all have lives and stories, too.

My feelings on the other characters changed over the course of the book; more than once, I went from liking to hating to liking again. I think that's what was supposed to happen, though. Again, Fisher writes from the heart and the things that happen here are going to evoke feelings from you, which is going to affect your thoughts on the characters from one moment to the next.

Emotionally, this book has some punch, and might even trigger some people, but Fisher has always been a writer of emotion and of taking the road you least expect. Go with it, because even if you come away not loving the book, you'll still want to become one of her Passionate Little Nutcases.

There are some aspects of the book that I found to defy reality or that seemed illogical to me, but those are likely not going to be a problem for everyone who reads it. It's also likely that those issues are "me" things. I tend to overthink an awful lot when I'm reading; it's a personal failing and it probably won't even happen to the majority of readers, so ignore this entire paragraph! :)

My biggest problem is that Fisher has used this particular premise before, and more than once. I don't want to give spoilers, but if you've read Fisher's other work, be prepared to get that deja vu feeling at various points in this book, particularly the climax and ending. Again, this isn't bad, and the overall premise of the book is highly original, and the work is good, the writing stellar and unique and amazing and engrossing, and the book is satisfying over all. I just felt that this was the last time I could accept this one particular premise.

Don't let any of this lead you to believe the book isn't worth your time because it absolutely is. It's heartfelt, it's original and emotional, it's definitely well-crafted as far as plot and execution, and you absolutely will not find another book like this anywhere, except perhaps in Fisher's back catalog. In fact, my opinions on this book may not be yours at all, and it would be a shame for you to miss out on what is a very good book that will take you places you never considered. Besides, reading a Tarryn Fisher book is like taking a master class on writing, plotting, and eliciting emotion.

After you've read The Wives, you're almost certain to find yourself looking to read more of Tarryn Fisher's books. Bookish Bitch recommends all of them, but we think you should start with Mud Vein and Marrow. Because they're awesome.

The Wives drops on December 30, 2019. I am giving this book Five Cups of Coffee (so you can stay up and read it all in one sitting!) and recommending it to everyone.

It's been a while since we heard from our friend and author-idol, Kendall Grey, and now we know why: She was off in a hyperbariatric chamber, bathed in grow lights, becoming something new. That something? Is KENDALL DAY. New pen name, new stories, new truths to be told. Seriously, the only difference you'll find in Kendall Day's writing and Kendall Grey's writing is a little less smut, or erotica as some folks prefer to call it. Falling for Mr. Slater is a romcom, first and foremost, with a little hot sex to make you sweat, and a lot of hard truths thrown in to make you think.

Mr. Jack Slater is an experienced teacher of gifted eighth graders. He teaches English to classes of motivated, over-achievers and is part of the "in" crowd at Bracken Middle School. After a summer spent with his best friend and fellow teacher Savage, banging beach bunnies and drinking themselves into a constant stupor in California, Slater learns that things are going to change. A new principal, a few budget cuts, and the loss of a couple of teachers changes everything and Slater is suddenly teaching science to a bunch of sixth graders who could not give a shit about anything the guy at the front of the room has to say. Slater's even less happy about his circumstances when he finds out that the first subject he'll be teaching that year is sex-ed. And that he's going to have a student teacher to supervise. Things really can't get any worse, can they?

Well . . .

The student teacher turns out to be Roxie-with-an-i-e Rambling. The worst student Slater's ever had in a classroom, or in his life in general. She coined the name McSlutbag, left him broken and damaged in more ways than one, and she did it all just for spite! Roxie is the last person Slater wants to spend the school year with, but he's really got no choic. And he needs the help, too. It's clearly not going to be a banner year, but Slater keeps his eyes on the prize despite all adversity: he intends to be Teacher of the Year this year.

Not surprisingly, Roxie remembers Jack Slater as "McSlutbag," and the worst teacher she ever encountered. She barely survived middle school and high school because of how he treated her, and she almost didn't go to college for the same reasons. It took her years to get over McSlutbag's insults, derision, and discouragement, and she's not about to let him stop her again!

Obviously, sparks are going to fly between the hot, sexy teacher and the beautiful, tempting, basketball-star student. But questions remain, the biggest one being this:

Can you get over your past, learn new things, grow and change and fall in love, forgive and forget, survive in a sea of assholes, and succeed in ways you never thought possible, all by just listening, paying attention, and hearing other people's ideas?

Read Falling for Mr. Slater when it's released. You won't be disappointed. Kendall Day is as good a writer as you'll ever find, and she's still got that sharp-edged, laser vision that hones in on the problem without making you feel like she's beating you with a hammer to make her point. She's still a master of the snort-laugh, and she's got descriptive skills like no one else; "...leaving Kuntz standing like the giant hemorrhoid he is in this rectum of a hallway." YASSSS!

Falling for Mr. Slater is great fun, full of heart and laughs and real feelings, all mixed in with some commentary on the education system that you need to read, and the kind of angsty back-and-forthing that makes a great romance story, the kind of crazy humor that will have you spitting your margarita all over your e-reader (so be careful), and the kind of fabulous writing and satisfying storytelling you can expect from Kendall Day.

Links:

<div class="big450BoxBody" style="background-color: white; background-repeat: repeat-y; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
The story is full of love and angst, as any good romance should be. The characters are fleshed out, the plot is believable, and the ending is satisfying.

How long is too long to wait for the love of your life to come to his senses? How much distance can you really put between yourself and your heartbreak in a small town? Does everyone always have to know your business?

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">

Trent Hennington can't commit, and he's kept Grace Rooney waiting for two decades. On again, off again, come and go, push and pull, this relationship has defined them both and Grace is ready for a change. Can she move on without Trent? Or will Trent finally man up and be the partner and man she needs him to be?

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
And Cooper! Cooper Townsend, best friend's brother and kind, open, honest, and very sexy; could Cooper be Grace's future? She'll need to be free of Trent to find out, but that's a little harder to accomplish than she'd expected. Especially when he keeps showing up and making things complicated.
Everyone from the first two books in this series is still here, and it feels a lot like visiting with friends.

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
I will admit that the core conflict was resolved a little too easily for me, and there is a trope here (I won't specify which one) that is used in the first two books in this series and is repeated here. I found this to be conspicuous, though it was certainly a logical occurrence given the story. The rest of the book, though, was spot on.

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
Overall it's a good book and the Hennington brothers remain their hot, sexy, protective, romantic, funny selves; their wives and girlfriends are still smart and sassy, independent and, most importantly, good to one another. The moms are still meddling in their children's lives, working as domestic cupid's assistants.

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
I was really anticipating this book, because Say You'll Stay and Say You Want Me were so terrific, and Michaels is certainly in fine form here, as well. But to be honest, Say You Want Me is a really hard act to follow and a loved it an awful lot, and I originally gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because of that. Still, this is a very good book, with a really good story, some great plot twists, and heavy doses of emotion, love, pain, friendship, fear, courage, humor, and reality. There's also a fantastic surprise in here that I never saw coming. Kudos to Corrine for that huge surprise; it's what caused me to put that fifth star up there.

<div style="font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; line-height: 21px;">
I'm hoping that there is at least one more book in this series, because Cooper Townsend deserves to find love, too. [Since writing this review, I've found out that Michaels plans a novella for Coop. Yay!]
Overall, I want you to get this book and read it and enjoy it. Because Corinne Michaels writes a great love story.
We were in love by the end of chapter one, and we're still going strong. We particularly love seeing her at author events; she gives great hugs!

One of the great things about Heidi, in addition to her sparkling personality and her generous nature (she's been known to spend an hour or more on the phone with an aspiring author or two, and has on more than one occasion gone out of her way to help a new writer get some attention), is that she continues to grow as a writer and to get better and better, and every book promises to be better than the last. The fantastic thing about this is that her books were very, very good to begin with.

Heidi's Tattoo Thief series is the story of a bunch of rockers looking to make it big, verging on that breakthrough, and realizing that it's not all there is in life. They find love, and it complicates everything while making their lives so much better. From the tortured lead singer who runs away to find himself and ends up falling in love with the house sitter, to the man whore guitar player who finds satisfaction when he meets the right woman, to the cuckolded drummer who finds a truth and a love that combine to set him free, to the bass player who stands by the target of a revenge porn scandal, these stories are romantic, hot enough to melt your Kindle, and romantic as hell. You owe it to yourself to give them a try; you won't be sorry. OOOH! The best part? A new installment of Tattoo Thief is due out this year! We can't wait to read Skip a Beat.

Heidi Joy Tretheway is also the author of the Grace Colton stories. Grace, left widowed and childless in an episode of gun violence in Oregon, has become a member of congress, hoping to make change happen. She is approached to run for Vice President on an unlikely ticket, and along the way she discovers that life - and love - can change in an instant. She discovers a few other things, too, and all of it makes for a great story. Two books of this trilogy are currently available, and while we don't know when book three is due, we're waiting with bated breath for it!

There are other books, too. We love A Handful of Gold, which takes your typical princess story and turns it on its ear. If your child needs to see a strong little heroine on a grand adventure, who is smart, kind, helpful, and victorious, this is the book to get. We love Audrey and we love this story.

Kendall Grey is incomparable as a writer. She writes for the sake of writing, going so far as to give away some of her work, just so people can read it. (More on that later.) And she writes well, whether her stories are about riotous rock stars or dystopian anti-heroes, or oversexed eco-warriors, or presidential candidates, her books and characters are amazing. She could write instructions for using toilet paper and make it great.

But beyond making you laugh, or snort-laugh, or swoon or groan or even get horny, Kendall Grey makes you think. Because behind the filthy language, the over-the-top sex, the libertines and rockers and repressed types, there is an intellect at work. Every Kendall Grey book contains two stories: The one you read, and the deeper meaning behind it.

Yes, the language would make Lenny Bruce blush, and yes, the sexual situations are insane, and yes, the entire story is just nuts. But that's not the actual story. That's the frame for the picture of the real thing Grey is trying to show you. Because Kendall Grey is trying to change the world, one reader at a time. That, or she's trying to make us all engage in some pretty questionable activities. Could be both, I'm not sure about that, but if she is, I'm all in.

I cannot heap enough superlatives on this woman's work. She's brilliant, and, as so often happens, an artist of this magnitude is not always appreciated in her own time. The Bookish Bitch wants to change that. So, here are links to some things. Her Facebook and Amazon author pages. Her Wattpad page and her website. Which you really ought to do, by the way.

Oh, and remember the giving away free thing? Well, currently, she's serializing the latest in her insane Hard Rock Harlots series, BANG!, for free. On Wattpad. As in GRATIS! And it's fantastic, although I'd suggest reading Strings, Beats, Nocturnes, Love Notes, and Rock before starting Bang. Because it helps, and because you need these lunatics in your life.

We've reviewed a few of Kendall's books here, and elsewhere, too.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">I want you to know I am RUINED! I loved this book so much that I cannot start a new one yet. The book hangover is strong with this one. In a good way... no, wait. In a FANTASTIC way. Corinne Michaels killed it with this amazing story.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">Angie and Wyatt are awesome. I don't want to give anything away, plot wise, so instead, I'll tell you that this book starts out with a shocker and there's lots of activity and romance and fun and sadness and tears and joy and love, love, love, love! Fast paced, except for the romance which... well, they're just not sure about that whole thing.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">They have different lives, they live different places, and they need different things out of each other; can they find common ground and adapt to one another or is this thing doomed from the start?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">If you read Say You'll Stay (and you totally should) then you know that Wyatt and Angie started out with a bang... literally. And you know that neither one of them is really the relationship type. And you know that Wyatt is a good guy but definitely a man-tramp. Angie is happy with her life as-is. How are they ever going to get together? Or will they? Will fate make them a happy couple or will their own misery keep them apart?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">There's attraction so strong it can't be denied, but is that all it is? There's love, new and fragile, but can it survive a tragic loss? There's fear and pain so intense that suffering seems like the only option; can they get each other through it? There's hope for the future, but is that future the same for both of them? Can a man and a woman love one another enough that love is really the only thing that matters? Or is it possible that, sometimes, love just isn't enough to heal the wounds?

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">I cannot say enough good things about this book. Because... it made me cry, folks, and that hasn't happened since Angela's Ashes in the 80s! That's how good Corinne Michaels is. I am now a dyed-in-the-wool, card carrying Corinne Michaels fanatic! Say You'll Stay was good and I knew I wanted more of Michaels's kind of romance, but Say You Want Me was more than I could have hoped for. If this pattern continues, Say You're Mine (due out soon-ish) is going to slay me. And I can't wait!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">If you are a fan of a strong, feisty, independent woman finding a strong, dedicated, loving man and of watching what happens when their worlds collide and the universe pushes them together, then this is the book for you. If you like sweet romance, true love, commitment, surprises, gut-wrenching tear-jerkers, and a great love story, this is the book for you. If you like hot guys who have hot brothers and who all need to find love, if you like meddling old ladies and loyal friends and a good cup cake, this is the book for you. If you like books, this is the book for you!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">Let me warn you that there is a very emotional situation in this book, and if you are one who cries easily, you might want to buy a box of tissue when you pick up this book. It's totally worth it, though. Really.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">Read it. Enjoy it. Read Say You'll Stay first, if you haven't already, because really, it's a great series and it's always fun to start at the beginning.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-left;">Seriously. Fab book. You'll love it.

This is an amazing story, told amazingly well.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Presley comes home from work to find her almost perfect life isn't so perfect anymore. She loses everything. WARNING: It's been a long time since a book made me cry. Angela's Ashes, I think it was, in the late 90s. So when I say that Say You'll Stay made me tear up and get all sniffly, know that this is some serious heart wrenching going on. Have the tissues handy.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Returning to her home town, Presley is humiliated, depressed, and having a really hard time coming to terms with her new reality. Living with her parents, sleeping in her teen-age bedroom (complete withe posters!), and raising her kids in an environment that is totally foreign to them, while trying to straighten out the mess of her recent past is just too much; at least she doesn't have to deal with her former boyfriend. The one she'd loved from the time she was a girl, who'd left her and gone on with his life. It's a little easier to know he's no longer living in the small Tennessee town she's returned to, so she won't be running into the guy who destroyed her world 17 years ago.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Or not. Because he's there. And IT'S still there, too. The attraction, the fire, the passion. The love. Zach is just as handsome, just as sweet as she remembers, but now he's living in town and dating the school bitch, who hasn't changed at all. It'd be so much easier for Presley to avoid Zach at all costs and go on with her life, but fate - and Presley's and Zach's brothers - aren't having any of that. Good thing, because what kind of romance novel would it be if all they did was avoid each other for 310 pages?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">This story will make you cry at the outset, then fill you with hope. There are laugh out loud moments, too. There's joy and hope, heartache and fear, romance and arguments, a meddling family (and town), a bar, nearly a bar fight, a bunch of horses, a misunderstanding, and a parade.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">The ultimate questions are these: How do you take a life that has been burned to ash and turn it into a life worth living? How do you take love betrayed and make it back into a love forever? How can a woman who's lost everything, who has nothing, and who is afraid that heartache awaits no matter what action she takes, become the strong, confident, and powerful woman she needs to be? And can she do all that while raising her sons and falling in love with her roots, and her ex, again?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Get this book. Read this book. LOVE this book. Because a strong, satisfying, romantic story about a strong woman overcoming tragedy is always a good thing but this one gets the blue ribbon.

Buy Links: Amazon.com

Who loves a hot, sexy, commanding, powerful, romantic alpha male or three? Who wants to be an independent, intelligent, strong, beautiful, multiply orgasmic heroine? Who loves finding adventure, excitement, suspense, danger, twists, romance, and surprises in their books? My answer to all of these is, ME!!!!! I'm hoping you feel the same.

There's so much I want to say about this book. So freaking much! But I can't. I promised I wouldn't. Because Meghan March knows when she's outdone herself and this book is definitely the next step up for her. She wants you to go in cold, just like I did, so the full effect of this story begins with the first line. Trust me on this; not knowing what to expect is just going to make this book better for you. I swear. There are a few things I can tell you though.

You get it all with Meghan March's 5th outing in the Beneath Series. Hot, gorgeous, tattooed men, beautiful, sexy women, steamy hot love scenes, and underneath it all, a yearning for the kind of love that sets your soul and your body on fire. It's all here. And you're gonna love every word of it.

We aren't giving you any hints here, folks. No character names, no plot lines, nothing. Why? Because I received an advance copy of this novel for an honest review and I was so impressed, and so happy with the whole story; I want you to be as surprised as I was when you finally read the last words.

I will tell you this, though. Beneath These Lies is proof that Meghan March gets a little better every time she sits down to write. Considering how good she was to begin with, that's high praise.

The writing is outstanding and the characterizations are great. You will buy into this, hook, line, and sinker. I promise. And no, no one goes fishing, so that's not a hint.

Here's a hint: If you like good writing, good romance, lots of the unexpected, plenty of action, and alphas, alphas, alphas.... get this book. Don't go skimming, or skipping around in it. Don't go reading the last few pages, and definitely don't spoil anyone else when you give this piece of reading heaven the five-star review it so richly deserves!

As always, click on the picture to buy it on Amazon.

I have been harping and nagging at you about this story. This amazing, incredible, surprising, outstanding story that, up until today, as totally free at Kendall Grey's website. It's a fucking masterpiece, written by a goddamned genius. I swear it. But, you can't get it for free anymore.

Starting this week, the only way to take this unbelievable and totally relevant-to-your-life journey is to buy the book. It will be available in paperback and e-book formats. Not free, but worth the price. In fact, it's worth it at ten times the price. Trust me on this. You are going to be amazed at this story, and at Kendall Grey's masterful execution of a tale full of love and fear, pain and redemption, good and evil, truth and deception, unearned kindness and undeserved cruelty, and ultimately of finding the heart of your life and becoming whole. It's about writing your own story, no matter where you are in your life, and not giving in to propaganda and the ramblings of madmen.

The book is called GHOSTS, and it's really, really, really good. Great. Fantastic. I cannot heap enough superlatives on this book to really convey to you how utterly intense and rewarding this book was for me. As I read each installment, I went further down Grey's rabbit hole, lined though it was with nuclear weapons, medical experiments, and secret agendas. I waited eagerly for each new work day so I could start my mornings with coffee and post-apocalyptic, dystopian adventures.

Parts of this book are FUCKING BRILLIANT! You will read words and phrases here that will make you stop, take a breath, and really rethink things before you move on. Because this story, despite the fact that it takes place in a decidedly dark and dangerous future, is the story of everyone. Each of us has lived in hopelessness at least once, experienced misery and misfortune, sought answers, found love and connection, then lost it. It's a true story, despite the fact that it's a work of immense fiction. This story, and its truth, will haunt you.

Use the buy links and get the damned book. I am going to really be on you about this! The story is so fresh yet so recognizable. The characters are real, the plot is engrossing, and the writing is beyond stellar. Yes, it's dark. Depressing at times. Thought provoking. It's also a fucking demonstration of a writing talent that is so woefully under-appreciated it's fucking criminal. This shit is the real deal.

Buy links are below. Your mission? Go. Get. GHOSTS. You need to read this story and let it move you, let it scare you, let it turn the fucking lights on in your head, and let it, ultimately, amaze you.

Meghan March wraps up the Dirty Billionaire series in style! An excellent read.

We catch up with Holly, looking for herself in her past, and with Creighton, looking for his frequently-gone-missing wife. We find that they're both looking for the same thing: To love and be loved without having to give up the things that matter to them.

This story plays out as you might expect, with obstacles and misunderstandings and steamy, dirty, wild, smokin' hot sex. The story is resolved nicely, if a little unrealistically, and is entirely satisfying. This is romantic fiction about a billionaire alpha and a young woman from the trailer park who is desperately seeking a better future, after all; realism isn't nearly as much fun to read!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and the entire series. You will find a twist to the story that I didn't particularly like, but it didn't affect my overall satisfaction with the book or the series. In the end, lovers of romance, dreams, billionaires, and sex will find this story - all three parts - to be well worth the time spent reading it.

Dirty Pleasures by Meghan March

After the great ride that was Dirty Billionaire, I was a little concerned that March's sophomore entry into this series might come up lacking. Silly me; part two moves our story along nicely.

Our heroine, Holly, has left her new husband, afraid that he doesn't realize how important her career is to her. Creighton isn't happy about this turn of events and sets about retrieving his runaway bride. In the course of reuniting - or not - we learn more about both partners, we see some bad things happen that turn out to be not so bad, and we realize that both of the main characters are experiencing some similar feelings about their situation. The writing is smooth and emotional, the sex is insanely hot, and both characters are well-drawn.

There's a but at the end of that last sentence.

I try very hard not to give away plot points, not to spoil stories, and not to ruin the book for anyone. However, I feel the need to explain why I gave Dirty Pleasures four stars, when I wanted to give it five. So, without giving away too much, here you go:

There are tried and true tropes and tricks in every genre of writing, including romance. Some are great and really make the story better. Things like having your hero lose something that matters to them and have to fight to get it back. Sometimes a pregnancy scare can fit the bill, or an ex-lover showing up. There are, unfortunately, some little things that I dislike very much in writing. This book contains three of them.

1. I am not big on cliff-hanger endings. I knew going in that this book would have one, though, so that's not my biggest issue here. I also know that March will give me a fantastic climax to the story (much as Creighton does for Holly so often) and a satisfying, happy resolution to things. So I can live with the cliffie.

2. Miscommunication can work well in a story. However, when the lack of understanding occurs because one character won't shut up and let the other offer an explanation, or when one assumes that what they think is what actually happened and won't listen to anything else... it makes me nuts. I realize I'm not explaining this well, but I think most of you know what I mean. Maybe you were late for dinner because you decided to have a go at the blonde in your office, which is what your business rival told me, or maybe you just held up in traffic due to a 2 car accident; assuming my version is correct, and refusing to let you tell me what happened, and then blaming you when the relationship isn't working? No. March employs this particular ploy and in my opinion it detracted from the book.

3. Why is it that no character is ever honest about their feelings until it's too late, or almost too late? I don't get it. This is not March's fault as it's part of the plot, but it makes me want to tear my hair out! I hate this particular trope and I wish she'd found a way to write this story without using it. That said, it's effective as heck.

None of which is a criticism of Meghan, because the woman is a fabulous writer. I love her work. I'm just being honest here.

Read Dirty Pleasures. It's a good story. Don't let my own personal preferences deter you. Holly is still head-strong (even pig-headed at times), as is Creighton. The pairing is fun, the naughty bits are very, very naughty, and the writing is excellent. Besides, you want to be ready when the conclusion to this series, Dirty Together, comes out!
Let me put this in other words. Words that Kendall herself would
probably choose:

Yes, I am an unabashed and devoted Kendall Grey fan. I was

nothing to do with her sense of humor, her determination and loyalty to her
friends and fans, or even with the fact that one of her swag items at signing
is personal lubricant; it’s all about the stories. And the fluid, emotional,
scarring, affecting, deeply personal and truthful words she uses to tell them.

Kendall doesn’t just tell you a funny, raunchy, exciting

I’m so serious. Kendall’s characters are over the top. They’re free-thinkers, free lovers, and
free-range crazies who are out to live their lives as they want, and in so
doing, these folks are also out to teach you something. Just because they might be wild, drunk, high,
scared, murderous, and horny doesn’t mean they aren’t telling the truth. These people gain insight, grow, and learn
from their mistakes. Would that we all could do.

The stories that Kendall Grey creates are amazing. Rockers
reaching for fame and fortune while remaining true to their art. Whale warriors

sounds, actually). Family fighting for family, no matter what that means for
them. And now, Ghosts.

Ghosts is a web serial.
It’s outfuckingstanding and I’ve never read anything like it. Every
day, I RUSH to my computer to read the day’s installment. I die a little bit
with Sarah, the main character, and I feel her pain, her fear, her
determination. Post-apocalyptic, dystopian, post-modern, science fiction…
nothing does it justice. This is a story of abuse. Of hunger and pain. It’s a story of fear, stark-raving mad
terror, and quiet, sobbing dread and apprehension. It’s about survival, and
death, and murder. It’s about living every single, endless, pain-filled day of
your life walking on the razor’s edge between life and death and not even
knowing for sure if you’d notice the difference.

I really, truly wish everyone would read this serial. Ghosts is kind of life-changing in a way. If

hope for all of us. If a normal (and having met Kendall, I use that term
loosely) human who sews and cooks and packs lunches and takes walks with
children and cleans house and a million other every day things, if that person
can put this story down on paper, then maybe there’s a goddamned genius living
inside all of us. Kendall grey gives me hope that someday I’ll write something
even half as amazing as Ghosts or Rock or Nocturnes or any of her other books.
She gives us all hope for a world where art matters more than money or social
acceptance or accolades. She’s living that.

Ghosts is not an easy read. It’s dark, it’s full of bad
things, and it can be a little gory at times (although not excessively so,
imho). It’s also built on string theory –
the time frame moves around and it takes a few installments to get it all down
and chronologically organized in your head, but it’s totally worth the minimal
confusion in order to take this story in, feel it, and then think about it as
you wait for the next episode. I’m
really being sincere here. I cannot believe how incredible this story is. Some
days it makes me smile for hours, and some days it’s like a punch to the gut;
not many authors can affect my emotions like Grey does. Just because it is
sometimes scary, sometimes painful, sometimes bloody, doesn’t mean it isn’t
great; it hurts good.

There's love, hate, fear, passion, joy, happiness, sorrow, and even a little envy in here. <span style="background-color: white; color: white; font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The upshot of this series, I think, is that we all have to grow and change to live and love successfully. Sometimes, we find lifelong friends and partners along the way, people who make us more than we are alone, and sometimes we find people who are only moments in our lives and not meant to be there forever. Facing adversity makes you stronger and really can't be avoided anyway, so you have to take the bull by the horns. Sometimes, we find that those we love have committed sins and that, no matter how much we love them, we can't get past those. This series of books is a woman's journey and in addition to being fun, exciting, and a little (occasionally a lot) sad, it's also got some deeper truths to be mined and paid attention to. We are all works in progress.
<span style="background-color: white; color: white; font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Thirty-Five seems to be approaching some sort of climax and a culmination of the things that have come before. Not that I expect Swank will end the series any time soon, but just that many questions our protagonists have had will soon be answered and there will be some sort of wrap up of a major story line. I say this with great hope of finding out just what the heck is going on, as well as for seeing where the author takes our heroine next. (Recombinant by Denise Grover Swank and Shannon Mayer)

The minute I heard that Shannon Mayer (one of my favorite urban fantasy writers of all time) and Denise Grover Swank (a favorite of mine, as well) were teaming up to write a book, I got all excited and giddy. It had to be good, right? I mean, these two on their own are amazing writers and successful authors, so I figured the Blood Borne Series was certain to be worthwhile.

Turns out I was right.

Rachel is a reporter who stumbles across a huge story that involves murder, vampires, military experiments, corrupt government, danger, and Lea.

Lea is a vampire and a cazador. A hunter. She hunts her own kind, determined to eradicate the vampire virus from the earth.

Together, Lea and Rachel take on a vast conspiracy and some very nasty people and creatures in order to get to the bottom of things. There's action, adventure, violence, a little blood, love and pain, and everything else that makes for a great story.

All books have things in them that someone here or there won't enjoy, and this book had one of those for me. I'm not going to say what, because you might like it and I don't want to influence your opinion of this book. Suffice it to say that the story was compelling enough, and the writing engaging enough, that my dislike of one aspect didn't convince me to put the book down. I read this book in a total of about four hours and loved it overall.

The most notable thing about this book is that the shift between writers and characters is flawless. You absolutely cannot tell which woman is penning a particular segment. So often, when a book has more than one writer, the shifts between authors can be distracting, or even detrimental to the story. Not so here. It's almost as if Mayer and Swank are the same person, but . . . wait! I have never seen them in a room together! Could it be? No, of course not. But really, the writing here is smooth, intense, appealing, and utterly seamless. Swank and Mayer pull this off like they've been writing together for decades.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable story, featuring a couple of tough, strong, intelligent, resourceful, heroic women. They don't need rescuing, they do the rescuing. Gotta love the girl power!

The Bookish Bitch gives this book 5 bottles of Happy Bitch wine:
They come together and it's inevitable.

Well, it's inevitable except for Elle's fear of being controlled, which leads her to limit her encounters to one night stands. Also inevitable except for Lord's past as a one night stand guy, himself. Inevitable but for Lord's belief that by having anything but a relationship with Elle, he might cause trouble for his brother and Vanessa, who happens to be Elle's BFF. And it's all inevitable if not for Elle's horrible family. And the murders.

What I really, truly, deeply love about Meghan March is that when she tells a story, it's not the tried-and-true boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back, girl loses boy, they reconcile, fight the evil, and live happily ever after. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I have enough stress in my life without worrying about fictional characters! March, on the other hand, takes two unlikely people, puts them together, and then pits them against the conflict *together*. There's no yo-yo relationship. They use their new found relationship to learn to be together, and whatever problems come against them are not from each other, but from outside forces. By pushing her characters to fight for one another, together, she creates believable, understable romances. She also creates really steamy, sexy, well-written love scenes.

CAUTION: March's stories are addictive and you may find yourself thinking about Con, or Lord, or one of her other heroes while, you're supposed to be working or cleaning house or whatever. You might realize that you've read one of the Beneath stories 20 times and you're considering going back for number twenty one. You might even decide you can live without that morning latte, and spend the money on Meghan March books to hand out to your friends! You've been warned.

Overall, a good read, a good story, a satisfying romance, hot smut, multiple orgasms, one sexy, tatted, pierced badass of a hero, a girl who has the same fears and insecurities as the rest of us, and true love. Relatable, enjoyable, and totally drool-worthy. All of them are, really. Click on the pics to buy on Amazon.
Full of strong women, powerful men, politics, subterfuge, deception, current issues, sexism, flowers, kayaking, hot sex, and a burgeoning love story; Grace Colton's story has a lot for you to enjoy.

Having suffered the loss of her husband and her only child five years ago in a moment of horrific violence, Grace enters the world of politics to make change in the world. She's not a big name, and her state isn't one with a lot of clout or controversy, but Grace is determined to make America safer, better place.

A casual night out results in a one-night stand for Grace and a sexy stranger. What transpires from that point on is a wild political ride that will leave you wanting the rest of the story. I try not to give away plot in my reviews, but suffice it to say that Grace and Jared both need to learn that the past doesn't have to keep you from having a future, and that love may not always come along at the best time, but it always comes along at the right time. They also need to learn not to make out under street lamps!

The writing here is top-notch. Heidi Joy Tretheway is also the author of the Tattoo Thief romance series, which I've also reviewed, and every book she publishes is better than the last. All of her stories are well-plotted, believable, romantic, and realistic, and she's always written well, but she gets sharper and better with every outing. Her humor and her ability to amp up the intrigue are huge in making this story not just good, but interesting and absorbing. You really won't regret reading this.

Grace Colton is Tretheway's newest, best, strongest heroine. Jared Rankin is one of the sexiest, most complex men she's created. The political story is well thought out and researched, and Grace's backstory is true-to-life. Oh, and so is the smoking hot sex!

This is a serialized story right now, so there's more to come beyond this first installment. It's something to look forward to, because I think this is the beginning of a really great political story as well as a terrific love story. Which means you need to get this installment, and then you need to be ready to get all the rest of this story as it's released.

I love the Hard Rock Harlots series. I love the attitude, I love the foul mouths and hot sex, I love the characters, and I love the stories. This novella did not disappoint.

Kendall Grey has created an over-the-top, insane group of young, hot, horny rockers who, in the end, are just like everyone else; they're just a little more honest about who they are than the guy you meet in line at the grocery store.

This little peek into one of my favorite series features Jinx and Toombs, alternately known as Gianna and Jeff (when they're alone) who love one another intensely, but who are learning that love isn't all that matters and, while sex and love are not the same things, sex is important, too. A holiday getaway begins their journey toward resolving some issues standing in the way of making this relationship - important to both of them - work. We also get a teaser that this is not the last we've heard on the subject.

I'm not going to get into detail here. If you've read the other three books in this series, you know what to expect. If you haven't, you should. Before you read this, actually, because there's reference to older stuff in here.

Kendall Grey gets it. She is not of the generation that refused to accept change. She understands what it is about rock and roll that frees us, she understands what it is to write a song or give a performance that lays your heart and soul out on the stage for the world to see. She recognizes that sex for the sake of sex is as valid a concept as love and marriage and that these are not diametrically opposed positions. She can take filthy language, kinky sex, deep love, and familial angst and put it all together in a way that makes you feel, makes you laugh and then cry and then breathe. Heavily. Kendall Grey writes the truth and throws in the love, the sex, the conflict, and the music to provide the context for what she's trying to tell you. You ought to give a try at listening to her.

This novella is definitely worth the 99 cents. It's also worth the price of the first three books, Strings, Beats, and Nocturnes, to get into this world and fall in love with Grey's wild rock stars and their romantic escapades.

WARNING: Reasons to NOT read this story:

1. You are opposed to hot, nasty, kinky sex between unmarried people just for the sake of having a good time.
2. You are currently living in a morally repressive and misogynist theocracy where owning such literature would be punishable by death, dismemberment, or stoning.
3. You tend to faint at the liberal dropping of the F-bomb.
4. You don't believe that the female orgasm, the G-spot, or subspace are real.
5. You are a pearl-clutching, poodle-permed, blue-rinsed, granny-panty wearing biddy who will have conniptions over this stuff.
6. You're a judgmental, chauvinistic, moralistic, self-impressed moron who fails to understand the very truth of what Grey is trying to tell us: That we all need to be loved, and we want to be loved just as we are.

If you don't fall into one of those categories, get this book.

I realize this is a lot of rhapsodizing over a pretty short story, but that ought to tell you something. So jam your inhibitions, your purity ring, and your moral compass down the garbage disposal and let 'em grind while you read the best rocker romance series ever.

The latest entry in Swank's Rose Gardner Mysteries is a winner! A great, fun read with lots of mystery and heart, and plenty of action and intrigue, this story is a great continuation or a great series. While nothing is perfect, this book is more than worth the price and the time, especially if you're as hooked on this series as I am.

Let's start by saying that if you've never read any of the Rose Gardner mysteries, you should definitely take advantage of the current sales of the previous books in this series and start from the beginning, Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. Because there's a lot of background that will delight and entertain you as you work your way through to this story. Now....

Rose Gardner is the sweetest, strongest, most entertaining southern girl you'd ever want to meet. The people who matter to her are a wonderful collection of funny, sad, warm, helpless, strong, intelligent friends and enemies; together, they fill this story with terrific interaction with our heroine, great lines of dialogue, and an exciting trip from start to finish.

The main story here is that Rose and her BFF, Neely Kate, are looking for Neely Kate's missing cousin. Joe Simmons and Mason Devereaux are working on a secret project that involves both their jobs in law enforcement. The two investigations dovetail and wind up in a conflagration at a strip club in one of Swank's typically tense, chaotic climaxes. Skeeter Malcolm, Fenton County's newest King of the Underworld, is here, too, and he's right in the thick of everything, making threats, providing information, and protecting Rose from all kinds of mayhem while at the same time creating plenty of mayhem of his own.

Hilary, Joe's ex-girlfriend who claims to be carrying his baby (I have my doubts about that) is here to create just a tiny bit of hate and discontent for Rose. She's moved to Henryetta and is still plotting to get Joe on a permanent basis, which is what she pretty much always does. Hils, girl! He's just not that into you!

Violet, Rose's sister, is paying the consequences for her betrayal of Rose and, while they're working on their relationship, things are not what they should be. It's still not clear to me that Violet truly, deeply understands the horrible things she's done to her sister in the past couple of books. Rose is right to take things slowly and carefully.

Neely Kate, pregnant and learning to cook, has a much bigger part in this story than she has in past outings, and she's a delight. She knows everything about every person they come across, it seems, and her juicy little tidbits of information are loads of fun, not to mention helpful to Rose in figuring things out.

Mason's mother, Maeve, has moved to town and set up housekeeping. She's there for Rose a lot, as she does some of the heavy lifting in her son's relationship by providing Rose companionship and insight while he's off doing his "very important job" as assistant DA of Fenton County.

Rose has divided her nursery business and brought in Joe and Bruce Wayne - former pot head slacker turned landscape gardener - as partners and is getting ready to re-open after a disastrous Thanksgiving vandalism.

And we meet Abbie Lee, a deputy sheriff who's burning a torch for Mason. One she'd seemingly like to use to light rose up and cook her to a crisp so as to have a path straight to Mason's heart. Given Rose's consecutive relationships with Joe - a former State Police detective and now Fenton County's Chief Deputy - and Mason, the county's ADA, Abbie has decided that our girl is a "badge bunny," a police groupie, and therefore unworthy of Mr. Devereaux.

The action is engaging and the story is well plotted. The writing, as always, is very good. Swank gets better with every outing and her writing gets tighter and more involving every time she publishes. As prolific as she is, it's amazing that she has time to also improve her work, but she does. I'm never disappointed in a book by Denise Grover Swank, and, as in this case, I'm often surprised at how incredibly good she is. I love this series, and pretty much everything else this talented woman writes.

As I said, nothing is perfect. I have some small complaints. For instance, Rose never mentions her dog, Muffy, without using the phrase "my little dog." After about the 15th time, I kind of wanted to scream that I KNOW THE DOG IS SMALL! Overused words and phrases tend to stand out and get on my nerves. A quibble, I know. Not really worth the mention, but I did it anyway.

Another complaint is that Rose is very big on being independent, taking care of things herself, and being her own person. Laudable, to be sure. But the minute she lands herself in hot water with the law, the first thing she does is calls Joe or Mason to fix things. You can't have it both ways, girl, but again, a small issue.

My biggest complaint about this book is that nothing happens. Not a thing in the overall, start to finish story that this series is telling is addressed. We don't move forward with Hilary's campaign to get Joe and demolish Rose. Nothing happens with Joe and Maeve, Mason's mother; in the novella that precedes this book, they began a friendship that just lays there doing nothing in this book. There's nothing that happens with Violet and Mike, who are divorced but might be working on that. There is no movement with Bruce Wayne, really. We don't even hear from Miss Mildred, Heidi Joy, or Jonah. How do you go to Henryetta and not even peek in at Miss Mildred?

Mason and Rose keep yammering on about how much they love one another, but that relationship really doesn't evolve in this story. There's lots of lip service to it, and there are some life-threatening events that occur and cause much love-pledging and such, but nothing really happens to convince me that these two belong together. (Yes, I'm a fan of Joe/Rose and hope against all hope that they are end game, but that's not my point at all.) Every time Rose tells someone, or the reader, how much she loves Mason, or any time she points out to Joe (for the thousandth time) that she's with Mason now, it sounds to me like she's trying to convince someone of that. Whether it's the audience or herself is what I'm not sure of. Had Joe's father not intervened, Joe and Rose might, and probably would, still be together and at no point has Rose or Mason or Joe or anyone else brought that up. Which reminds me of another thing that doesn't happen.

There is some suspicion on Rose's part that certain events in this book are the doings of Joe's father, a rich, controlling, manipulative megalomaniac who's out to put his son into the White House at all costs. But only Rose seems to see his hand in some of the events in this book. The men in her life - both law-school graduates and experienced investigators who are bright enough to go head to head with her - are oblivious? Really?

Ultimately, while this is a fun outing, an entertaining story, and a pretty good demonstration of Swank's writing chops, and while it's a peek into the always delightful world of Henryetta, Arkansas, there's one main thing it's not. It's absolutely not forward movement. It definitely IS a clear set up for the next installment of the series, and it's certainly a good read, and that's really all it needs to be. Thirty-Three and a Half Shenanigans was just vaguely unsatisfying for a fan of the series, which I am, but that's not to say I didn't like it. Because I really did. I just wish there had been more momentum on the whole.

As the clues come together and the curses, prophecies, and secrets all point in the same direction, I finally understand what the heck is going on here!

First of all, Denise Grover Swank gets better with every book she writes (which, when you consider how many books she publishes each year is pretty impressive!) and this entry is proof of that. While I liked the first book, The Curse Keepers, and I liked the second book, The Curse Breakers, I really enjoyed the heck out of this book.

Our heroine, Ellie, is finally - FINALLY! - learning not to go off half-cocked. Well, okay, there are a couple of exceptions here, but at last Ellie is making sensible choices. One of my complaints about the first part of this series that Elinor Dare Lancaster wasn't the intelligent, sensible woman she should be in this mess. She always wanted us to think she was, and finally we can start to count on her acting like it. Yay! I just really enjoyed that she started listening to people rather than to her own doubts, fears, and insecurities.

David, Ellie's lover and historical expert, is along for the ride and their relationship matures here. David is pivotal to Ellie's understanding of the situations she finds herself in, and he's immensely helpful in unraveling some of the mysteries that present themselves.

Collin shows up and grows up. I don't want to give too much away here, but Collin and Ellie's best friend Claire take on expanded, vital, more supportive roles than they have in the past. It's refreshing.

If I had to find a quibble with this series, I'd say that it's often difficult for me to keep the supernatural players (gods, demons, various spirits and evil-doers) straight. There are a lot of them. I also find it distracting when presented with names that are difficult to pronounce and no pronunciation is given. At some point, it would have been nice if someone had mispronounced Mishiginebig and been corrected so I wouldn't have stopped every time s/he is mentioned to try to decide how to say it. But, that may just be me. Please note, though, that these are very small bits of a big and very enjoyable saga, though, and not worth worrying about.

The writing here is, as usual, very good. Swank can string a sentence or two together with the best of them. She can also create a real mystery that is creepy, compelling, and truly intriguing. Add to that a good romance, some romantic angst and regret, and answers to most of the questions you've had reading this series, and what you've got is a satisfying read that, if you're anything like me, you'll finish off in short order.

Basically, we're here to finally resolve the titular curse, and to answer the questions of what Ellie's and Collin's powers and heritage mean. And we do. Mostly. Swank has clearly kept the door open for epilogues of some sort, and I'm looking forward to whatever happens next.
Book one centers on Gavin and Beryl. Book two, Tyler and Stella, deals with, well, you know. This book can stand alone, but reading the series in order is a good idea anyway; you have more "insider knowledge" that way.

I love Heidi Joy Tretheway, I love the Tattoo Thief series, and I love Jayce McKittrick. I don't care if he's fictional, I want a Jayce of my own.

As I've said of Tretheway before (when reviewing Stella and Tyler's story), her writing gets better and better and better. Every outing is better than the last. This book is so well-written, and so well put together, and clearly so well researched (about revenge porn, among other things) that you just can't find anything to quibble with.

Jayce is a hot rock star with a sense of humor and need for control. He's also quite the stereotypical man whore, dragging a trail of groupies and easy one-night stands wherever he goes. He's happy with his no-strings attached, let's all have fun and then move on policy, until he meets Violet. She's different and she's special, and he knows it from the word go.

Violet is a teacher, an artist, and a photographer. She's been hurt, she doesn't trust easily, and she's trying to make a life for herself after a really bad relationship ends. To add to her problems, she starts getting very dirty, very scary texts which lead her to discover that there are naked pictures of her posted on the internet. Photos that were never supposed to see the light of day.

Revenge porn is a real thing, people. This book, in addition to being fun, and full of love, romance, and some sizzling sex to boot, is a cautionary tale: what you put on the internet stays on the internet. Forever. For. Ev. Er.

I'm not telling you anything more about the plot, other than to say that it's worth the trip. Read this book! Violet and Jayce are real people and they have a story to tell. It's a cautionary one about how bad things happen to good people. It's a hopeful one, about how making changes can and does happen. And it's a love story. Of course it is. Tretheway writes some of the best love stories you're ever going to run across.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The dialogue is real, and relateable, and a lot of it stuff I've heard come out of my own mouth. Jayce is a lot more than just a rock star, just a hottie, just a womanizer. He's a real guy with big decisions to make, big concerns to address, and a big case of lust for the beautiful red-haired woman whom chance tosses into his life.

Please do yourself a favor and read Revenge Bound. Because it's worth it to see two scared, reticent people make their way to one another, and because the things that are there to be overcome only make the story more compelling. But mostly, read this book because Heidi Joy Tretheway is a really terrific writer, with a real voice, who deserves your attention. Romance is not as easy to write as so many seem to think; Tretheway, however, certainly makes it seem like it is!

As always, click on the pic to buy the book. You won't regret it!

I have many books to review, but no time right now. Not to give the kind of attention I want to. So, I'm posting this list. You should check out the books on it and let me know what you thought of them. Maybe write a review in the comments. These are books I've finished, or am starting on, and that I feel good recommending to you. Enjoy them, and let me know your opinion on them.
